CGST + SGST vs IGST – a worked example

A Lucknow seller sells goods worth ₹20,000 at 12% GST. To a buyer in Kanpur (same state) the invoice shows CGST 6% ₹1,200 + SGST 6% ₹1,200 = total ₹22,400. To a buyer in Delhi (another state) it shows IGST 12% ₹2,400 = total ₹22,400. Same tax, different heads – pick the right one in GST / tax treatment and the tool splits it for you. Cess, discounts and amount already paid are supported too.

Tips that save trouble later

This tool prepares the document; it is not tax advice and does not file returns or generate e-invoice IRNs. Confirm rates and HSN codes with your CA.

Frequently asked questions

What must a GST tax invoice contain?

Under CGST Rule 46: supplier name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive invoice number (max 16 characters); date; recipient name, address and GSTIN if registered; HSN/SAC code; description, quantity and unit; taxable value; GST rate and amount (CGST, SGST/UTGST or IGST); place of supply with state; whether reverse charge applies; and the supplier’s signature. The form above has a field for each.

When should I charge IGST instead of CGST + SGST?

Charge IGST when the supplier’s state and the place of supply are different (inter-state). Charge CGST + SGST when both are in the same state, or CGST + UTGST in a union territory without a legislature.

Can a composition dealer use this?

Yes – choose Bill of Supply. Composition taxpayers and sellers of exempt goods cannot charge GST, so the bill of supply shows no tax line and carries the required declaration.

Does this create an e-invoice with IRN?

No. Businesses above the e-invoicing turnover limit must generate the IRN and signed QR on the official e-Invoice portal. You can still use this tool for a draft, a proforma, or if e-invoicing does not apply to you.

Is it free and private?

Yes. Free, no sign-up, no watermark. Your GSTIN, customer list and amounts stay in your browser and are not uploaded.
