Retail barcodes: GS1 numbers explained simply
A barcode is only a picture of a number. Supermarkets, Amazon and Flipkart care about who owns that number. Brands get EAN/UPC numbers from GS1 (GS1 India in India, GS1 UK, GS1 US). Random numbers from the internet can clash with another company’s product and get your listing blocked. For things you never sell through retailers – stock you count yourself, class equipment, event tickets – CODE128 with your own numbering is perfect and costs nothing.
Printing tips
- Leave white space (quiet zone) on both sides of the bars.
- Black bars on white paper scan best; avoid red bars – many scanners use red light.
- Do not stretch the image unevenly; resize in proportion.
- For thermal label printers, use the SVG or the Big PNG and test one label first.

Frequently asked questions
Is this barcode generator free for commercial use?
Yes. Download as many CODE128, EAN-13 or UPC-A barcodes as you need, with no watermark and no sign-up, and use them on labels or packaging.
Do I need GS1 numbers to sell on Amazon or Flipkart?
Usually yes for branded retail products. Marketplaces and supermarkets check EAN/UPC numbers against GS1. Buy numbers from GS1 India, GS1 UK or GS1 US, then use this tool to draw them. Some marketplaces allow an exemption for unbranded or handmade goods – check your seller help pages.
What is the check digit in EAN-13 or UPC-A?
It is the last digit, calculated from the others so scanners can catch typing mistakes. If you enter 12 digits for EAN-13 (or 11 for UPC-A), the check digit is added for you; if you enter all digits, a wrong check digit will be rejected.
Which barcode is best for my own inventory labels?
CODE128. It accepts letters, numbers and symbols such as - and /, so codes like SKU-1042 or INV/2026/15 work, and almost every scanner and phone app reads it.
Can I print the barcode on a label printer?
Yes. Download the SVG for the sharpest print, or the PNG at Big size, and keep the white space on both sides of the bars.
