Passport size photo size in pixels
For Indian passport applications, the official photograph guidelines on the Passport Seva portal ask for a colour photo of 630 x 810 pixels with a white background. This guide shows how to crop and resize your photo to that size in your browser, and what to check before you upload.
Source: the Passport Seva "Guidelines for ICAO Compliant Photographs for Passport Applications" (mportal.passportindia.gov.in), checked 21 October 2026. Rules can change, so confirm on the upload screen of your own application. This page does not state a file-size limit because the guideline does not list one in the section we checked.
What the official guideline asks for
- Colour photo, 630 x 810 pixels.
- White background.
- Head and top of shoulders, with the face filling 80 to 85 percent of the photo.
- Full face, front view, eyes open and clearly visible, mouth closed, no tilt.
- Even light with no shadows on the face or background, no flash reflection and no red eye.
- Photo not altered by computer software.
How 630 x 810 relates to 35 x 45 mm
A 35 mm by 45 mm photo has a width to height ratio of 7:9. 630 divided by 90 is 7 and 810 divided by 90 is 9, so 630 x 810 pixels keeps exactly the same shape. That is why you can crop to a 35:45 frame first and then set the pixel size.
Step by step: make a 630 x 810 photo
- Take the photo in daylight or an evenly lit room, facing the camera from about 1.5 metres, against a plain white wall.
- Open the Photo Editor and select your photo. It stays on your device.
- Open the Crop tab and choose "Passport 35:45". Drag the box so the head sits in the centre with a little space above the hair.
- Apply the crop, then open Rotate & resize and set the width to 630 and the height to 810 pixels.
- Export as JPG and look at the result at full size.
- If your upload screen also gives a KB range, open Photo & Signature Resizer and enter the minimum and maximum KB your form shows.
Check before you upload
Look at the exported photo, not the original. Check the face is sharp, the eyes are visible, the background is plain white and nothing is cut off. The Photo Editor does not promise that a photo will be accepted. The guideline asks for an unaltered photo, so do not use beauty filters, skin smoothing, AI enhancement or background replacement. Only crop and resize to reach the required size, and retake the photo if the light is poor instead of editing it.
